Men account for approximately 75% of all suicides worldwide. This staggering statistic underscores the urgent need for targeted mental health support for men.
Over 60% of men with mental health issues receive no treatment at all. The reluctance to seek help due to stigma or societal expectations leaves many men struggling in silence, often with severe consequences.
Men are twice as likely to develop alcohol dependence. This often stems from using substances as a coping mechanism for untreated mental health issues, leading to further complications and a higher risk of mortality.
Untreated mental health issues cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion per year in lost productivity. Men's mental health is a significant contributor to this loss, affecting both the workforce and broader economic stability.
Men's mental health struggles have a profound impact on their families, with children of affected fathers being up to twice as likely to develop behavioral and emotional problems. This creates a cycle of distress that can span generations, making early intervention crucial.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among boys aged 10-19, with rates for boys being three times higher than for girls in this age group.
Boys are twice as likely as girls to be diagnosed with a behavioral disorder, such as ADHD, which often coexists with anxiety or depression.
One in four boys has experienced a traumatic event, such as abuse or violence, which significantly increases their risk of developing mental health issues, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety.
Boys who spend more than three hours a day on social media are significantly more likely to experience depression and anxiety, with research showing that increased social media use correlates with poorer mental health outcomes.
Boys with untreated mental health issues are more likely to drop out of school, engage in substance abuse, and face challenges in forming healthy relationships, leading to long-term consequences for their futures.
Anquinarta Lee, a compassionate advocate for mental health, served as a dedicated school counselor for a decade before transitioning into a role focused on broader community impact. She received a BA in Psychology and a MEd in School Counseling, and recently certified as a Mental Health First Aid Instructor. She is also currently attending Liberty University to obtain a PhD in Psychology: Theology.
Recognizing the unique challenges faced by men in accessing mental health support, Anquinarta became a vocal advocate for male mental health, striving to destigmatize seeking help.
Passionate about fostering inclusive and accessible mental health resources, Anquinarta founded a nonprofit organization called, I Am Light Ministries, embracing a holistic approach that acknowledges the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit in wellness. The mission is to provide mental health support to build stronger faith and futures for boys, men, and their families.
Anquinarta's vision extends beyond traditional boundaries, seeking to also revolutionize the way individuals within the justice system receive mental health care. With this goal in mind, Anquinarta continues to support agendas for systemic changes that prioritize mental health support for individuals within the justice system, aiming to create a more effective approach to rehabilitation. While engaged in youth Prison Ministry through her former church, she saw how some systems failed the youth and adults as well. Through her advocacy and dedication, Anquinarta Lee continues to be a beacon of hope and change in the realm of mental health awareness and support.
